The Brazilian forestry sector has expanded to the Cerrado biome regions, where the soils are highly acid, with a high exchangeable Al content and a general nutritional deficiency. Nevertheless, the levels of soil organic matter (SOM) under the forest plantings are generally high and may play an important role in the complexation of Al in the soil solution. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the introduction of Acacia mangium in monospecific Eucalyptus spp. plantations on the soil C content and its effect on the soil Al availability. The study was conducted at four experimental sites in São Paulo and Minas Gerais States in Brazil. We evaluated three treatments: monospecific stands (pure) of Acacia mangium and Eucalyptus and a mixed stand (constituted by Acacia mangium and Eucalyptus in 1:1 proportion), with four replicates at each site. The soil total C and the Al content in the soil solution (Als), the exchangeable Al (Ale) and the organically complexed Al (Al-OM) were determined at the soil depths of 0?5 and 5?10 cm. The introduction of Acacia in Eucalyptus plantations (mixed stand) significantly increased the soil C content by approximately 10% only at one of four sites studied, which was probably because the land was used as pasture before the introduction of the forest plantation and the because of high N input in a Eucalyptus plantation. Despite little improvement in the soil C content and consequently in the Al complexed by the soil organic matter, the introduction of Acacia in the Eucalyptus stands increased the Al availability by approximately 13% due to the reduction in the soil pH.
This work purpose was to assess the effects of excluding ultraviolet radiation on Coffea sp. leaf pigments, using the species C. arabica and C. canephora. The experiment was realized in Campos dos Goytacazes, at the State University of Northern Fluminense. 32 plants were used, so that 16 (eight of each species) were maintained in a mini greenhouse under polycarbonate plates that filter UV radiation and the others 16 plants were maintained in another mini greenhouse under glass plates that don?t filter UV radiation. The wavelengths reached in the mini greenhouse were measured. Contents of chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), total chlorophyll (CT) and carotenoids (Car) was determined. From these variables, it was possible to obtain the relation between the: Chl a⁄Chl b. Still in this experiment, the content of anthocyanin was quantified. The exclusion of ultraviolet radiation in the polycarbonate mini greenhouse was 70%. Both genotypes evaluated showed no significant differences between each other in content of Chlorophyll a, but there was a tendency of lower values to C. canephora in the ultraviolet exclusion environment. The chlorophyll b patterns were similar to chlorophyll a, with no differences between environments or between genotypes. However, under both conditions, C. arabica tended to have higher values compared to C. canephora. The content of total chlorophyll showed no significant differences between genotypes, but lower values to C. canephora in the exclusion environment were observed. There wasn?t difference between genotypes for content of carotenoids, but a tendency of higher values for both in the environment with presence of UV was observed. Regarding the content of anthocyanin, there was a tendency of higher values for both genotypes in the presence of UV. Therefore, our results show that in most variables evaluated in C. arabica and C. canephora, there wasn?t significant differences between the environments, which demonstrates the maintenance of leaf pigments concentration in both conditions.
